Check-in page
A skier scans the trailhead sign and the check-in page opens on the zone's channel, the sign state and a short form. The phone's position matches the check-in to the nearest sign within 500 m; too far, or with no position, the skier picks the sign location or skips it. The check-in is anonymous or by email, and with no signal it is saved on the phone and sent when the page next opens with signal.
Live conditions show on this page, as in the prototype: today's avalanche danger and the nearest station's snow, each with its source and time (Jamie, 2026-10-22 PT).
The flow
A phone-made id means sending twice never duplicates; on an iPhone, opening the page again is what sends.

Avalanche forecasts and snow readings on this page come from the Sierra Avalanche Center and NRCS, and may be out of date. They are no substitute for the full forecast or for your own judgment. Tahoe Backcountry Radio and Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol are not responsible for information from others.
Signed in as an installer, the page also shows: I just installed this sign (#65).

Three ways to build it
Low not chosen
The QR code opens the old Jotform with our words. Nothing to build; no way to know which sign location a check-in came from.
Medium not chosen
Our own form, online only. Live channel and sign state; the person picks the sign location from a list; with no signal the check-in is lost.
High committed
Offline save, a waiting-to-send list, and matching to the nearest sign within 500 m. Committed, because a trailhead rarely has signal.
What the tests prove
- Matching300 m from a sign matches it; 900 m asks the person to pick.
- Once onlythe same phone-made id sent twice is stored once.
- Sign reportdamaged or missing opens one replace sign ticket, never two (#66).
- Emaila steward's email counts it in the steward check-in report.
- The pageshows the channel at a location whose sign is not yet installed or down for the summer, and says so.
Measurements
Counted on the wireframe; live numbers come from the usage compartment once the screen exists.
Decided
- The install link (I just installed this sign) shows only to a person who is signed in and holds the installer role; nobody else sees it (Jamie, 2026-10-22 PT, #65).
- Live conditions show on the check-in page, as in the prototype: the avalanche danger and the nearest station's snow, each with its source and time (Jamie, 2026-10-22 PT).
- No Home Screen icon is asked of skiers. What lets a page work with no signal is having opened it with signal before; installers are asked to use the Home Screen, skiers are not (answered 2026-10-22 PT, #54).
- Fields: one free-text box and the optional email. Heading out / Coming back is dropped and the two comment boxes merge; the box's words are a draft for Jamie (Jamie, 2026-10-22 PT, #54).
- No partner channel anywhere; only the community channel and privacy code (Jamie, 2026-10-22 PT, #54).
- The sign report stays hidden where no sign is meant to be up (Jamie, 2026-10-22 PT, #54).
- The disclaimer from #84 sits at the bottom, since the page shows live conditions (Jamie, 2026-10-22 PT, #84).
